XTU Campus Network
The Xiangtan University (XTU) campus network has two domain names of
www.xtu.edu.cn and
www.xtu.cn. After several times of expansion, upgrading and transformation, it can be accessed through both the wired and wireless connection.
The campus network, through the deployment of four high-performance core devices, is a large two-layer network topology consisting of the exchange layer, the regional aggregation exchange layer, and the end user access layer. It is of good security, reliability and extendibility. The devices, interconnected with each other through the 40G fiber optic link, form a backbone “loop network” which is able to protect link bandwidth when exchanging data. The four core devices create a virtual logical unit through virtualization technology. Once an equipment failure occurs, others can achieve the millisecond-level failover, which guarantees none affect to the network operation. The four virtualized core devices can automatically conduct load sharing within the system to achieve inter-device link aggregation and link load sharing.
The core campus network maintains a transmission speed of ten Gigabit or one Gigabit to aggregation, and one Gigabit or 100 megahertz to the end user desktop. It has network port access to China Telecom, China Mobile, China Unicom, and China Education and Research Network (CERNET) with an export bandwidth of 38 Gbps. The outlet flow is distributed through the flow control wall equipment reasonably. The IPv6 has been opened as a supplement to the IPv4, with 20 complete C-CERNET network IP addresses, 32 China Telecom IP addresses, 29 China Mobile IP addresses, and 5 China Unicom IP addresses. Office and teaching buildings and students’ dormitories have got access to the campus network through the wired and wireless way, to meet the basic teaching, research, management, and learning requirements on the campus LAN. The present campus network backbone links and the network platform devices are able to meet operation and construction demands of next 5 to 10 years. The free wireless campus network has been opend to provide more convenient network services for teachers and students in the following areas: Beishan Terraced Classroom, Beiyuan Canteen, No. 1 Teaching Building, some classrooms of No. 2 Teaching Building, No. 3 Teaching Building, Law School Building, classrooms of the Public Administration School, Engineering Building Terraced Classroom, Club, Computing Center, Teaching Building in jointly-constructed area, Old Gymnasium, Nanshan Terraced Classroom, Nanyuan Canteen, Qinhu Canteen, classrooms of the Business School, Library, Gymnasium, classrooms of the Foreign Language Building, Student Activity Center, Xingxiang Canteen, Xingxiang College Block B, Xingxiang College Block C, Xingxiang College old teaching building, classrooms of the Xingxiang College No. 5 Student Dormitory Building, Art Institute, Shaw Building, and some outdoor public areas.

The campus network provides basic WEB, E-MAIL, and DNS services, and VPN services for all the teachers and students, which enables those public network users to share campus network resources conveniently. The users are managed by the real name authentication system. A security system composed of firewall and WAF system is adopted to ensure the campus network stable operating.
As of October 2018, there are 68,522 teaching, researching, and administrative users, and individual teacher and student users in the campus network. The number of mailbox users is 60,064. It contains 42,548 network nodes.
The XTU Chinese portal started construction in May 1997. After several times revision, its latest Chinese and English versions began official operation on June 1, 2016. There are 109 independent websites under the portal system, including 22 colleges and universities, 24 Party and management departments, 2 organizations, 13 directly affiliated units, and 48 other sites.
The smart campus framework has been basically completed, thanks to the available campus network and the effective information system integration. Unified identity authentication, personal information portal, the second phase construction of the campus card system, student apartments and college buildings access control systems have all been put into use for teachers’ and students’ convenience.
