Establishment of Xiangtan University Press

March 28th is a special day to be remembered in the development history of our university---Xiangtan University Press has formally established on that day.

The opening ceremony was presided by Liu Mingtai, Director General of Hunan Press and Publications Bureau. Wang Keying, Associate Director of Committee of Population, Resources and Environment of the CPPCC, former CPPCC President of Hunan Province, Chairman of the Board of our university; Wen Xuande, Vice President of Hunan CPPCC; Ma Guocang, Deputy Department Director of Book Publication Administration Department of General Administration of Press and Publication of the People’s Republic of China; Li Lingsha, Associate Director of Propaganda Department of Hunan CCP Committee, Zhu Jiangang, Chairman of the Board of Hunan Publication Investment Co. Ltd; Tan Dashuang, Vice Secretary of the CCP Team and Associate Director General of Hunan Press and Publications Bureau; Yin Feizhou, Associate Director General of Hunan Press and Publications Bureau; Shen Jiyun, Associate Director General of Hunan Education Department; Li Jiaqiang, Vice President of The Publishers Association of China, Executive Director General of Chinese University Press Association, Director General of Tsinghua University Press and Zhu Youzhi, Dean of Hunan Academy of Social Sciences attended the opening ceremony.

Ma Guocang read out the Approval On the Establishment of Xiangtan University Press Co. Ltd. of General Administration of Press and Publication of the People’s Republic of China and the congratulatory letter from Long Xinmin, Director General of General Administration of Press and Publication of the People’s Republic of China.

Luo He’an, President of our university, read out the congratulatory letters and telegraphs from superior departments and other friendly units. The establishment of Xiangtan University Press got lots of concerns from many domestic publication units. More than twenty units sent their congratulatory letters or telegraphs, including The Publishers Association of China, Chinese University Press Association, People Press, Zhonghua Book Company, China Social Sciences Press, Tsinghua University Press, Tuanjie Press, Communication University of China Press, etc.

Peng Guofu, CCP Secretary of our university, pointed out in the opening speech that the establishment of Xiangtan University Press is a long-cherished dream of all the staff and students of Xiangtan University. It’s a persistent pursuit of the university and also an excellent gift to the fiftieth anniversary of the University. The approval of the establishment of Xiangtan University Press is really not an easy thing in the compression and regulation period of the national presses now. The establishment of the press shows the staff of Xiangtan University not only can plan a big event, but also can get it well done. One important aim we gather here at the grand opening ceremony of the press today was to inspire all the staff to keep up the spirits of planning for big events, working for big events and trying our best to get them well done. We should be fully responsible to our work, pursue creative, superior level in our work and contribute to the fiftieth anniversary of our university with top-ranking achievements! Peng Guofu also pointed out that the university press is an important battlefield in the university’s Marxist ideology construction, a high-class visiting card of the university in international communication and cooperation, an unique engine for the upgrading and high quality teaching and research and a powerful lever to promote the construction of high-level university. The good operation of Xiangtan University Press is a glorious mission with great responsibilities. The university will further advance the resultant force, highly focus on the construction of the press just like the highly focus on the application of the press, fully support the development of the press just like the fully support of the establishment of the press, abide by the tenets, integrate the resources, build the brand, operate with its own feature and contribute to promote the construction progress of high-level university and the construction of strong educational and cultural province.

The delegates from congratulatory units Li Jianguo, Director General of Hunan People’s Publishing House, and Li Jiaqiang, Director General of Tsinghua University Press, also delivered their speeches on the opening ceremony.

Wen Xuande pointed out in his speech that the establishment of Xiangtan University Press is of great significance to adjust and optimize the structure and distribution of the publication industry in Hunan Province, to accelerate the research and spread of the Hunan Culture, to promote the development of the high education of Hunan Province and to accelerate the process of constructing strong educational and cultural province. He also put forward three expectations for the press: the first is the accordance with the mainstream to occupy the major battlefield. The press should carry out the concept of scientific development, stick to the precision editorial concept and practical, innovative scientific attitude, adhere to the reality, real life and the people, provide more and better spiritual cultural products to develop the advanced culture of socialism, and carry forward the spiritual civilization of socialism. The second is based on the new platform to service education and research. Press should stand consistently in the forefront of the times, running social services for colleges and universities in teaching and research, building the press into a teaching and research incubator base, as well as a display window and the wide road for conversion, forming a cultural communication filed for the gathering of talents and great masters. The third is to take the whole society’s interests as their own responsibility and carefully create brands. The press should, based on a broad international vision and innovative spirit of the times, provide more works and better works, so as to promote the development of cultural industries, and make its due contribution to building a harmonious Hunan.

It took more that twenty years from the application to the establishment of the Xiangtan University Press. The press is formally named as Xiangtan University Press Co. Ltd., which is directed by Hunan Press and Publications Bureau and undertook by our university. There are departments like Administration Department, Editor Department, Publishing Department, Marketing Department and Finance Department in the press. Now there are 7,200 square meters area for office use. The press is managed and operated under the company's system and the business scope of the press includes the publishing of the textbooks of the studies, specialties and courses in our university; the teaching references, tool books needed for the teaching in our university, the academic works and the translated works in the major specialty fields of our university; the common political theory readings for the teaching needs of universities, and the publishing of university textbooks of the same specialty system for the universities without university presses according to the allotments and arrangements of the administrative authorities of the university.
