Introductions of Xiangtan University

  Xiangtan University is one of national key comprehensive universities which embraces natural scince, technological science and social science with the authorization of the National Education Ministry to enroll foreign students. It situates in Xiangtan city, an area of outstanding natural beauty and a remarkable place producing outstanding people----- such as Mao Zedong, Zen Guofan, Liu Shaoqi and Zhu Rongji, Qi Baishi, who changed Chinese modern history. Huxiang culture, the key makeup of Chinese culture, was cradled here. From ancient times to the present, Xiangtan is well known throughout the world for its unique cultural atmosphere and excellent people of talent.

  Since its establishment in 1958, Xiangtan University has been developing under the close attention of three leading bodies of the central government. In September of that year, the first chairman of P.R.of China, Mao Zedong inscribed the name of "Xiangtan University" and endowed it with the spirit of self-reliance and hard struggle as well as constantly-seeking progress. With its fast development, it was ratified respectively as a comprehensive and a national key university by the State Council in 1974 and 1978.

    Now, the university has:
  • 32000 students studying in 20 academic faculties
  • 63 undergraduate bachelor's programs, 69 Master's degree programs,
  • 3 Master's professional degree programs, 9 Doctor's degree programs,
  • 2 postdoctoral scientific research bases, 1 engineering research center of Ministry of Education,
  • 1 key laboratory of Ministry of Education, campus-card normalized research center of Ministry of Education,
  • 3 key research base in arts of Hunan province and 8 provincial key subjects during the tenth "Five-Years Plan" period,
  • The campus covers an area of 280 hectares with the buildings over 700,000 sq.m..

  The university employes a total staff of over 2400 with 1232 full-time teachers at present, including 184 professors, 337 associate professors, 3 trans-school academicians and 36 persons enjoyed special allowance awarded by the State Council.
