On October 18, a special dean forum was held at Law School, Xiangtan University. The deans of Chinese and African law schools gathered online to discuss legal education issues in the context of the COVID-19 epidemic.
The Fourth China-Africa Forum of Law School Deans is a special forum held during the COVID-19. It aims to promote the main theme of China-Africa unity and cooperation; respond to the challenges and opportunities in the post-epidemic era; expand cultural exchanges between China and Africa during the epidemic; promote in-depth cooperation in legal education between China and Africa; share China-Africa legal talent training experiences; strengthen joint construction of China-Africa legal research think tanks; and, provide legal guarantees for deepening China-Africa economic and trade cooperation under the background of the “Belt and Road” Initiative.
The forum was held both online and offline, and the main venue is at Xiangtan University. Eight deans of law schools of African universities and 27 experts and scholars from well-known Chinese universities and research institutes participated in the forum.
The opening ceremony was presided over by XTU Vice President Liao Yong’an. Zhang Wenxian, president of the Legal Education Research Association of the Chinese Law Society; Damas Ndumbaro, Tanzanian deputy minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation; Wang Yi, vice president of Renmin University of China; Li Bochao, XTU president; and, Han Dayuan, deputy secretary general of the National Legal Professional Degree Graduate Education Steering Committee, attended and delivered speeches.
After the opening ceremony, the forum has four parts for keynote speeches. Thirteen Chinese and African university deans delivered 13 keynote speeches. The guests, on the theme of “China-Africa Legal Education Exchange and Cooperation in the Context of the Belt and Road Initiative”, highlighted the hot issues of China-Africa legal education cooperation under the new situation of epidemic, and made in-depth discussions and suggestions on China-African legal education teaching method transformation and curriculum system reform, the field of law research, the training of foreign-related legal talents, and humanities exchanges and cooperation.
The forum was sponsored by the Legal Education Research Association of the Chinese Law Society and the National Legal Professional Degree Graduate Education Steering Committee, organized by the XTU Law School, and the School of Law of Renmin University of China, and jointly undertaken by the School of Law of Makerere University in Uganda and the China-Africa Economic and Trade Law Institute of Xiangtan University.
