Recently, the Ministry of Education (MOE) announced the results of the 8th Higher Education Institution Outstanding Scientific Research Achievement Award selection campaign. The book, The Great National Hero: Mao Zedong and the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression won the second prize of the Higher Education Institution Outstanding Scientific Research Achievement Award in the category of Humanities and Social Sciences. It was edited by Li Youxin, special professor of MOE’s “Changjiang Scholars” program and director of the Research Center for Mao Zedong Thought, Xiangtan University.
This award is considered to be the most credible and influential one in the field of humanities and social sciences in China.
The award-winning book discusses Mao Zedong's great and unique contribution to the victory of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression from theoretical and practical perspectives. It deeply reveals the role of the Communist Party of China (CPC) as the central pillar in the war against Japanese aggression. It clarifies the important question of “why Mao Zedong is called a great national hero”, and strongly refutes the wrong position of “historical nihilism” in the study of Mao Zedong, the history of the war against Japanese aggression, and the CPC history.
After its publication, the book has been widely praised by the academic circle, and exerted an important influence on the study of Mao Zedong Thought and Marxist theory. It also won the second prize of the 14th Hunan Provincial Outstanding Social Science Achievement Award. It was a finalist for the 6th China Excellent Publications Award. It was included in 100 kinds of “key books to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War”, which were announced by the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee and the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television.
