On the morning of September 17, the 2021 World Computing Conference, co-hosted by the People's Government of Hunan Province and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, was convened at the Changsha International Conference Center. The “Celebrity Speech: Applied Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence”, one of the characteristic events of the conference, opened in the afternoon. It was organized by Xiangtan University and Hunan National Center for Applied Mathematics.
Mathematics is the foundation of the innovation and development of artificial intelligence, and it can provide original ideas and basic theories for solving the key core problems faced by the development of artificial intelligence industry. The lecture focused on the development trend of fusion and innovation of applied mathematics and artificial intelligence, and invited well-known experts such as academicians at home and abroad to discuss the application and practice of mathematics in the field of artificial intelligence, promote the integrated innovation of mathematics and artificial intelligence, and advance the application promotion and ecological construction in the field of computing.
Five special guests delivered speeches. They were: Wang Yaonan, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and director of the National Engineering Laboratory of Robot Visual Perception and Control Technology; Luo Zhiquan, academician of the Academy of Science of the Royal Society of Canada and vice president of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen; Hu Dewen, academic leader of the Control Science and Engineering Discipline of the National University of Defense Technology and leader of the Hunan High-tech Innovation Team; Lv Jinhu, dean of the School of Automation Science and Electrical Engineering of Beihang University and researcher of the Academy of Mathematics and System Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; and, Liu Qun, chief scientist of Speech and Semantics of Huawei's Noah's Ark Laboratory. They discussed on the integration and innovation of applied mathematics and artificial intelligence from the aspects of machine vision technology, communication network technology, brain science technology, intelligent coordinated perception and control technology, and pre-training language model, and brought the audience an academic feast.
Huang Yunqing, secretary of the CPC Committee of Xiangtan University and director of the Hunan National Center for Applied Mathematics, presided over the meeting. Lu Xianhua, member of the CPC Leadership Group, deputy director, and inspector (highest level) of the Hunan Provincial Department of Science and Technology, made a speech. Yu Zuguo, vice president of Xiangtan University; teacher and student representatives from Xiangtan University, Central South University, National University of Defense Technology, Hunan University, Hunan Normal University, Changsha University of Science and Technology, and Hunan Agricultural University; and, representatives of Yuelu Mountain National University Science and Technology Town, high-tech and economic and technological development zones of Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan City Cluster, scientific research institutes, enterprises and institutions inside and outside the province, attended.
Hunan National Applied Mathematics Center is one of the first batch of thirteen national applied mathematics centers approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology in February 2020. It is the first national-level platform in the field of mathematics in Hunan Province. The center is based on Xiangtan University, and jointly built by the Central South University, National University of Defense Technology, Hunan University, Hunan Normal University, and Changsha University of Science and Technology, as well as scientific research institutes and enterprises.
As an important part of the national science and technology innovation system, the center is an important base for organizing high-level applied mathematics research and mathematics applied research, training mathematics talents, and conducting applied exchanges. It now has identified five key study orientations of “Big Data and Artificial Intelligence”, “Mathematical Modeling and Optimization in Intelligent Navigation and Remote Sensing”, “Numerical Simulation of Scientific and Engineering Problems in Intelligent Manufacturing”, “Modeling and Analysis of New Energy System in Large Power Grids”, and “Research on High-efficient Basic Common Algorithms”. It will highlight condensing, proposing, researching, and solving mathematical problems in a number of national major scientific and technological tasks, major projects, and major needs for Hunan's characteristic industries and enterprise development.
Since 2020, the center has undertaken 2 national key research plan projects and 1 central government-guided local science and technology development fund project. It has established Xiangtan JD Intelligent City and Big Data Research Institute, Spatial Intelligent Computing and Data Processing Research Center, and other multi-party cooperation platforms. It has coordinated with companies to solve a number of key technical bottlenecks in the fields of industrial applications, exploration industry, medical and health, climate prediction, unmanned driving, and medical simulation.
