On the afternoon of October 27, Xiangtan University hosted a virtual meeting to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the founding of the Confucius Institute at the University of León, Spain. Wu Haitao, Chinese ambassador to Spain; Liu Wenqiu, Chinese cultural minister-counsellor to Spain; José Miguel Sáez Carnicero, Educational Planning and Management director general of the Castile and León Autonomous Community; Luis Domingo González Nuñez, Teacher Innovation and Training director general of the Community; Li Bochao, president of Xiangtan University; Yu Zuguo, vice president of Xiangtan University; Juan Francisco García Marín, rector of University of León; and, Roberto Baelo Álvarez, vice rector of University of León, attended the conference in Madrid, Valladolid, Xiangtan, and León via video connection. The board members of the Confucius Institutes of the two universities attended. José Antonio Diez Díaz, mayor of León, and Fu Jun, vice mayor of Xiangtan, extended congratulations on the successful opening of the conference via videos.
Ambassador Wu fully affirmed the achievements made by the Confucius Institute at the University of León over the past ten years. He noted that the Confucius Institutes are important platforms for the world to learn about China. They have become important windows for Spanish people to learn the Chinese language, understand China, and Chinese culture. They are bridges of language, understanding, and friendship between the people of the two countries. He expected the Confucius Institute at the University of León to continue to play a role as a bridge; make new contributions to strengthening the cultural exchanges and cooperation between China and Spain; and play a greater role in strengthening the communication between the two nations as the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Spain is approaching.
León Mayor Díaz spoke highly of the outstanding contributions made by the Confucius Institute at the University of León in the cultural exchanges between the two cities. He expressed his gratitude for the support and help received from the Xiangtan government and Xiangtan University during the COVID-19 epidemic.
Xiangtan Vice Mayor Fu remarked that the Confucius Institute at the University of León has made fruitful efforts to establish the sister-city tie between Xiangtan and León, and maintain close exchanges and cooperation between the two cities. He is full of confidence in the future development of the Confucius Institute and the in-depth collaboration between the two cities.
Director General Carnicero introduced the development status of Chinese language teaching in the Community. He looked forward that the Confucius Institute at the University of León will create more opportunities for the public to learn Chinese language and culture.
Rector Marín acknowledged the contributions the Confucius Institute has made in promoting Chinese language and Chinese culture in the past ten years. He said that the University of León will continue to support the development of the Confucius Institute and look forward to furthering partnership between the two universities.
President Li Bochao, on behalf of the Xiangtan University, thanked people from all walks of life at home and abroad for the concern and support of the Confucius Institute at the University of León. He highly appreciated the efforts made by the Confucius Institute in promoting the integration of Chinese and Spanish culture, people-to-people exchanges, and mutual learning between the two provinces and cities. He said Xiangtan University will work together with the University of León to make the Confucius Institute better and more distinctive.
The meeting was successfully convened. After that a series of celebration activities will begin. The Confucius Institute at the University of León will continue to hold a variety of cultural activities and various theme lectures.
