From August 20 to 27, a delegation from the China-Africa Institute of Xiangtan University was invited to Ethiopia, South Sudan and other African countries to attend academic seminars and carry out field research.

The delegation participated in events including the Readers’Forum ofXiJinping: on RespectingandProtectingHumanRights, the First China-Africa Human Rights Seminar, and the China-South Sudan High-LevelPeace and DevelopmentSymposium. It also conducted in-depth research at institutions such as the Eastern Industry Zone in Ethiopia, the 11th Chinese Peacekeeping Infantry Battalion in South Sudan (Juba), the South Sudan Project Department of China National Petroleum Corporation, the Chinese Medical Team in South Sudan, the Project Department for the Renovation and Expansion of Juba Teaching Hospital aided by China, and the University of Juba in South Sudan.

At the First China-Africa Human Rights Seminar, Professor Cai Gaoqiang, a delegation member, delivered a speech titledBuilding a China-Africa Space Climate Data Sharing Mechanism to Promote the Realization of the Right to Development in African Countries. He argued that extreme weather and climate change are severely affecting Africa’s socio-economic development. And space climate observation data serve as thecornerstone of modern climate governance. China and Africa should launch multilateral cooperation initiatives, build alliance networks, and expand the construction of observation infrastructure to enhance African countries’ capacity for space climate observation and effectively advance their development.

Associate Professor Liu Gongqi, another delegation member, gave a keynote address entitledConcepts and Mechanisms of China-Africa Human Rights Cooperation in the Context of the Global South. He maintained that China-Africa human rights cooperation must both focus on the commonality of human rights narratives among Global South countries and address the diversity of their economic and social development. Furthermore, it is essential to promote the rule of law in human rights protection, uphold the stability of constitutional human rights protection as a fundamental guideline, and ensure that laws across various fields adapt promptly to respond to new types of rights protection.
