Domestic and Foreign Scholars Gather in Hong Kong to Discuss Chinese Modernization

On October 25, theInternational Symposium on Chinese Modernization in Global Historical Perspective was held in Hong Kong. More than 40 experts and scholars from renowned universities at home and abroad, including Fudan University, University of Macau, Sun Yat-sen University, The Education University of Hong Kong, Xiangtan University, the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, University of Tsukuba, the University of León in Spain, and Saint Petersburg State University of Telecommunications in Russia, conducted in-depth exchanges and discussions centering on the seminar theme.

John Lee Chi-kin,President ofthe Education University of Hong Kong, also Dean of the Academy for Applied Policy Studies and EducationFutures, and Professor Chen Long, Vice Dean of the School of Marxism of Xiangtan University, delivered remarks on behalf of the organizers respectively. The opening ceremony was moderated by Professor Gu Minkang, Associate Dean of Academy for Applied Policy Studies and EducationFutures, EdUHK.

President Lee stated that thesymposium theme is profound and contemporary.Theworld-historical perspective enables us to transcend geographical and temporal boundaries, examining andunderstanding Chinese modernization within the grand trajectory of human societal development. With its uniqueness and profundity, Chinese modernization has not only reshaped China but also offered invaluable experience to the global community.

Professor Chen Long noted that, given its unprecedented scale, far-reaching impact and distinctive features, Chinese modernization constitutes an indispensable chapter in the worldhistory. Understanding Chinese modernization from a world-historical perspective is of great significance forgrasping the universal laws and particular paths of modernization,deepening exchanges and mutual learning between Chinese civilization and other world civilizations, andreflecting on global challenges and future directions for humanity.

Jointly hosted by the Academy for Applied Policy Studies and EducationFutures (EdUHK) and theCenter for Mao Zedong Thought StudiesofXiangtan University, which isakeyresearchbase of Humanities and Social Sciences under the Ministry of Education,thesymposium featured four plenary sessions and one open discussion, with 22 scholars delivering keynote speeches.

Professor Huang Xianzhong of Xiangtan University, together with other domestic and international experts,gave talkson topics includingMao Zedong’s explorations and historical contributions to China’s modernization,Chinese modernization and fine traditional ChineseCulture, acomparative study of Chinese and Western modernization,Chinese modernization and a new form of human civilization, and the global significance of Chinese modernization.

The participating scholars unanimously agreed that Chinese modernization represents a major achievement made by the Chinese people under the leadership of the Communist Party of China through long-term exploration and practice, as well as an exemplary model in the global course of modernization. It is essential to comprehend its developmental logic from a historical perspective and recognize its historical contributions through comparative analysis, viewing the world from China and China from the world alike.As an unprecedented practice in human history featured by unparalleled scale and unique connotations, Chinese modernization hascreated a brand-new paradigm for modernization, reshaped the landscape of global modernization, diversified its developmental paths, and opened up new possibilities for the enrichment and advancement of human civilization.
