The National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) recently released the list of approved 2022 International (Regional) Cooperation and Exchange Projects. The project “Novel Computational Methods and Applications for Nonlocal Multiscale Models,”led by Professor Yang Yin from the School of Mathematics and Computational Science and the National Applied Mathematics CenterinHunan, has been approved as a key China-Russia international cooperation project. The Russian partners institutions for the project are M.K. Ammosov North-Eastern Federal University and the Nuclear Safety Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
The project aims to address major scientific issues in high-performance computing at extreme scales, mainlyincluding the development ofreduced models and algorithms for extreme-scale problems, the development of high-performance computing software for nonlocal multiscale problems, the study of numerical methods for extreme-scale problems using machine learning, and the modeling and computation of fractures, complex flow and transport in multiscale subsurface strata, as well as scale transition issues at hydrological interfaces.
Under the Memorandum of Understanding on Science and Technology Cooperation between NSFC and the Russian Science Foundation (RSF), the twosides jointly fund collaborative research projects carried out by Chinese and Russian researchers, with the goal of fostering cooperation and exchange between scientists of both countries.
