According to the latest subject statistics released on March 15 by Essential Science Indicators (ESI), Xiangtan University’s Environment/Ecology discipline has entered the top 1% of ESI global rankings for the first time. It has become the university’s sixth discipline to achieve this distinction, following Chemistry, Materials Science, Engineering, Mathematics, and Computer Science.

The Environment/Ecology discipline has a doctoral program in the first-level discipline of Environmental Science and Engineering and a postdoctoral research station. Over the past 50 years, it has remained committed to the fundamental task of fostering virtue through education, been guided by major national strategic needs, and focused on quality, substance, and distinctive strengths, continuously enhancing its overall capacity and achieving new progress in high-quality development. The discipline is supported by one national-level platform, six provincial-level platforms, and one science and technology innovation team in Hunan’s higher education institutions. Over the past five years, it has secured more than 30 national-level projects, including key projects under the National Natural Science Foundation of China’s Regional Joint Fund, National Natural Science Foundation of China projects, and sub-projects of the National Key Research and Development Program of China. During the same period, it has cultivated more than 400 doctoral and master's students. The discipline has published nine textbooks included in provincial- or ministerial-level plans, established one national first-class course and five provincial first-class courses, and won seven provincial-level awards in research and teaching.

Essential Science Indicators (ESI) is an important analytical tool for evaluating research performance and tracking trends in scientific development. It has become one of the world’s widely used indicators for assessing the international academic standing and impact of universities, research institutions, and countries/regions. Based on research output, ESI provides a comprehensive evaluation of scientific research performance at the levels of countries and regions, institutional academic reputation, scientists’ academic influence, and journal impact, using such metrics as paper output, citation counts, average citations per paper, highly cited papers, hot papers, and frontier papers.

According to the latest statistics, Xiangtan University’s Environment/Ecology discipline has published 283 SCI-indexed papers, with a total of 4,890 citations and an average of 17.28 citations per paper. These figures indicate that the discipline has entered a stage of high-quality development, with its research strength and international academic influence continuing to rise.
