Profile

Liu Zhengbai, a distinguished specialist for national “Thousand Talents Program”, part-time professor and doctoral supervisor in Tongji University, and vice chairman of the US SAE Engine Combustion Committee, is currently chief engineer of the Dongfeng Motor Corporation Technical Center. He has been working as professor or senior engineer at the University of Wisconsin in USA, Gunma University in Japan, University of Erlangen-Nuremberg in Germany, Navistar International Corporation in USA, and the University of Windsor in Canada successively.

Prof. Liu has mainly been engaged in the research of engine technology and its applications. At present, he has published 45 academic papers in the first-class international journals and conferences, and one monograph titled “Combustion Science”. He has obtained 29 invention patents in the United States, and many others in the European Community, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, Brazil, and China.

The theory on three-dimensional instability of non-Newtonian liquid jets proposed by Professor Liu Zhengbai provides theoretical explanations for two high and new combustion technologies (high-pressure injection and two-stage boosting) in modern diesel engines. Based on an authoritative theory, he put forward the drop breakage theory, which offers a better theoretical explanation for diesel injection, atomization, mixing and combustion.

As the project leader, he developed the 7.6-liter and 9.7-liter diesel engine combustion system in the United States, reaching (equivalent to) Euro IV, Euro V, and Euro VI emission standards. When working in Dongfeng Commercial Vehicle Company, he improved design for National V diesel engine with a displacement of 11 liters. It significantly reduced production cost, and saved more than 100 million yuan each year for the company while keeping the diesel engine cylinder performance index at the international leading level. He also presided over the development of a 7.8-liter diesel engine with advanced performance.
