Ouyang Pingkai, native of Xiangtan City, Hunan Province, is a professor and doctoral supervisor of Nanjing Tech University, and currently an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. He graduated from the Department of Chemical Engineering of Tsinghua University in 1981 with a master's degree; and received his honorary Ph.D. in engineering at the University of Waterloo, Canada.

 

Academician Ouyang Pingkai is the earliest disciplinary leader involved in biochemical industry in China. As a pioneer and advocate of bio-manufacturing and industrial biotechnology in China, he has long been studying biotechnology application in advanced chemical, materials and fine chemicals engineering manufacturing. He and his team have made a series of pioneering and effective efforts in biocatalysis engineering, new biochemical equipment and inferior biomass production materials, energy and chemicals, and environmental pollution reduction. The application of biocatalyst coupling of reaction and separation has achieved remarkable results in bio-manufacturing of chiral compounds and production of high-energy phosphate compounds. They were awarded the first prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award and the second prize of State Technological Invention Award respectively.

 

His study in the field of industrial biotechnology has received extensive attention from both home and abroad. He used to be China Bio-industry Convention Chairman and won the Ho Leung Ho Lee Science and Technology Progress Award, DuPont Science and Technology Innovation Award, and the First Zhao Yonghao Innovation Achievement Award.

 

Academcian Ouyang is now Jiangsu Industrial Technology Research Institute Honorary President, Chinese Society of Biotechnology Honorary Chairman, Jiangsu Institute of Engineers Chairman, and National Engineering Research Center for Biotechnology Director. He once served as Nanjing of Tech University President and Jiangsu Association for Science and Technology Chairman.
